A Bookstore & a Boutique - Midland Texas USA

A new chapter begins for Kelly Keating and Alexandria Murphree as they open The Plot Twist, a charming fusion of bookstores and boutiques co-owned by the mother-daughter duo. The Plot Twist, located at 4400 N. Big Spring St. Suite C-28, hosted its grand opening Friday. It’s a dream come true for Murphree to open a bookstore, while Keating has always wanted to open a boutique. The duo decided to unite their visions, which culminated in a bookstore with a twist.

The Plot Twist lives up to its clever name, delivering more than just a typical bookstore experience by offering records, unique gifts, clothing and more.

“There was not really anything in Midland besides Barnes and Noble that accommodated a larger variety of genres for reading,” Murphree said. “We wanted something where my husband could go in and get something he would want.” Midland currently has two locally owned romance bookstores, which Keating said the duo love. However, they wanted a bookstore that offered more than just the romance genre.

The Plot Twist offers a large selection of books, including fantasy, romance, mystery, thrillers, manga, children’s books and more. They will also offer collector’s editions of books.

Murphree said they have decided to also include records in the store because many people are becoming more interested in buying records.  “It’s funny how everything comes full circle,” Keating said. “Nobody read regular books for a long time because you could read on your phone, your iPad or e-reader. Now everybody wants a physical book just like the records. Teenagers are playing records now instead of streaming.”

In addition to a wide range of books and records, the store also offers a wide variety of gifts, accessories and book-themed items.

“We have handmade leather bags, handmade earrings, pop sockets, wax melts, lotions, tumblers, purses and blankets,” Keating said. “We have just about everything.”

Book prices vary by publisher but typically range from $12 to $50 or more, depending on the book.

Murphree said that her friend donated books, and they used any damaged ones to create a wallpaper straight from the pages.
