It is the hard-to-define secret hidden within everyone, and the attempt to capture this on film has been my life’s work.” This is how portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh has described the attraction of his work.
In 1924, Karsh immigrated to Canada where his uncle, the established photographer George Nakash, taught him the basics of art. An apprenticeship was secured. In 1932, Karsh opened his own portrait studio in Ottawa. His clientele included high-ranking V.I.P. s. Karsh’s International breakthrough came with the portrait of Winston Churchill, it remains one of the most reproduced portraits ever.
