Have you ever looked at your photograph or drawing/painting and thought this doesn’t look right. Then you remember that somewhere along the line … you were told about the Rule of Thirds. It is a compositional of thumb in photography and other visual arts such as a painting. The Rule states that an image can be divided into nine equal parts … by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. The four points by the intersections of these lines can be used to align features in the photograph/picture. Proponents of this technique claim; that aligning a photograph with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the photo rather than centring the feature would? Doing this can make the picture more aesthetically and professional looking. This Rule is more of a guideline. Pleasing pictures can be made, ignoring one or more such rules.
